5 STEPS TO JUMP FROM GOAL SETTER TO GOAL GETTER

2020-07-30By : Harshita Chaarag

Everything objective you set and work to achieve is a goal. Be it the 3-legged-race you wanted to win in kindergarten, the fancy dress competition in 6th grade or the board result you knew would convince your parents to get you a new phone. As adult, though, our goals change a little. The new phone becomes a successful Goa trip to make Akash, Sameer and Siddharth from Dil Chahta Hai envious. The 3-legged race turns into the promotion with a higher pay scale.

SO WHAT EXACTLY IS A GOAL?

To put it simply, when you have a specific objective in mind that you put effort into achieving, that’s a goal. Goals may be categorized in terms of the duration and in terms of what they achieve.

TYPES OF GOALS AS PER DURATION

  1. Long Term: 1 year, 5 year, 10 year
  2. Short Term: 3 months, 6 months, 9 months
  3. Immediate Goals: 1-30 days

TYPES OF GOALS AS PER WHAT THEY ACHIEVE

  1. Physical Goal: When your goal is aimed at a physical result in terms of your health & well-being. Losing weight and working to a better health are examples of physical goals.
  2. Professional Goals: Also called your career or business goals, these are mostly long term goals aimed at professional progression. Value additions, up-skilling, and promotions can be included in professional goals.
  3. Financial Goals: Goals regarding money and finances fall under this category. A retirement fund, savings agenda, education fund for children, are examples of financial goals.
  4. Relationship & Family Goals: Building up relationships and taking actions to fulfil satisfaction in these is important. The goals that help you obtain these are just as important. Setting a few hours dedicated to your family & friends, planning a vacation, are a few examples of relationship & family goals.
  5. Self-development Goals: The goals you set that help you work on your self-image, your personal attitude, and related matters are self-development goals.
  6. Pleasure Goals: What are the things that you do for fun and the things you do for yourself? Goals related to your hobbies, for your entertainment all fall under the category of pleasure goals.
  7. Social Goals: Goals related to what you give back to the society and do for the community are your social goals. Charity work are examples of this.

5 STEPS FOR SUCCESSFUL GOAL SETTING

All goals are achievable if you approach them with the right frame of mind and work with a winning strategy. Here are the 5 steps you need to follow to set a winning goal strategy!

STEP 1: Be specific when you set a goal. Include “what, who, where, when & why”. When there’s ambiguity in setting your goal, you are more likely to dilly-dally.

STEP 2: Make it measurable & track your progress. This is the most effective way of understanding how well you are doing. Remember to reward yourself when you’re on track. If you fall short, tracking your goal in a timely manner also allows you to pick up and get back on track.

STEP 3: Add a time limit to your goal. Deadlines make us efficient.

STEP 4: Make a Plan-of-Action. That way you won’t feel lost. If you know what to do and how to do it, there’s no justification for procrastination.

STEP 5: Add an emotional or sentimental value to your goal. Emotions are the biggest driving factor in a person’s life. The moment you know there’s some kind of emotional or sentimental satisfaction to be achieved when you attain your goal, you will be more driven to achieving it.
